La Cour Suprême des Etats-Unis, qui vient de rejeter (5 voix contre 4) l’usage de la peine de mort contre les violeurs d’enfants, s’est trouvée un adversaire inattendu, si l’on peut dire, en la personne de Barack Obama.
Le candidat démocrate a déclaré :
I disagree with the decision; I have said repeatedly that I think the death penalty should be applied in very narrow circumstance for the most egregious of crimes.
I think that the rape of a small child, six or eight years old, is a heinous crime, and if a state makes a decision under narrow limited well defined circumstance the death penalty is at least potentially applicable.
Le New York Times (Michael Powell) rappelle qu’en 96 Barack Obama s’opposait à la peine de mort dans son livre, The Audacity of Hope, mais qu’entre temps, le futur sénateur de l’illinois “had come out in favor of the death penalty, saying that society has the right to express its outrage at heinous crimes.”

La victoire qui compte !
Comme nous le disions hier, l’information de la soirée ce n’est pas la victoire d’Hillary Clinton, qui n’a pas arrêté l’exode des superdélégués vers Barack Obama, mais bien la victoire de Travis Childers dans le Mississippi.
Hier soir, Travis W. Childers (Démocrate) affrontait Greg Davis (Républicain) pour un siège à la chambre des représentants dans le premier district du Mississippi. Et lors de cette élection, on a assisté à une nouvelle victoire démocrate dans un district républicain considéré comme imprenable il y a peu encore :
in normal times, Republican candidate Greg Davis would win this special election in a yawn. After all, Wicker won his seat seven straight times, with never less than 63 percent of the vote. President Bush carried this Mississippi district four years ago with 62 percent of the vote. The district has been a safe Republican seat ever since the heady days of the Newt Gingrich conservative revolution.
Et même si Childers est un démocrate très conservateur (pro life, pro gun), cette victoire ne présage rien de bon pour les républicains en Novembre. Et d’une certaine façon, elle valide la candidature de Barack Obama :

C’est maintenant à Hillary Clinton qui revient sur les propos de McCain sur l’irresponsabilité d’un retrait d’Irak en renversant la chose. Clinton est très calme. Posée. Elle ne parle de cette voix si agaçante qui la caractérise tant en meeting.
La différence avec McCain est flagrante, ce dernier avait l’air d’un élève qui ne comprenait pas tout.
